As we are an ever growing and ever expanding business there are constantly lots of changes being made. We strive to achieve the best results, but even as we get to what we percieved to be "the best" we always want more. This has been engraved into the very foundations of Lincoln Cottages by Monica and Ken the hard working and successful owners of Lincoln Cottages.

This week Simphiwe Daniso our maintenance manager has taken it upon himself to transform our gardens and take it to a new level. He has added in more plants, which he has grown himself, to our lush green grass banks and now we have an arrangement of colours to enjoy everyday. Sim has planted them in beautiful and intricate patterns which really do grab the eye.

What makes this garden even more precious is that it was truly grown with love and passion as Sim decided to tackle this task in his spare time and of his own free will. It is amazing to witness such a level of devotion and dedication from our staff members. Lincoln Cottages is for most of us not just a form of income but a home and a family. Thank you so much Sim for your hard work and going above and beyond the call of duty!

Everymorning i think most of us would rather stay in bed than get out. We want to hibernate and stay away from winters grasps. well heres a story of what could happen to you on this Winter...

The storm lasted so long that they thought they would starve. Finally, when the wind and swirling snow had died away to just a memory, the father, who was a brave warrior, ventured outside. The next storm was already on the horizon, but if food was not found soon, the family would starve.

Keeping his knife and spear close, he ventured out upon the most-frequently used game trail, watching intently for some sign, in the newly-fallen snow, of animal footprints or movement of any kind. The forest lay deep and oddly silent under its gleaming coating of ice and snow. Every creature of sense lay deep within its burrow and slept. Still, the warrior hunted, knowing how desperate his family had become.

As he moved through the eerie stillness, broken only by the soft caress of the wind, he heard a strange hissing noise. It came from everywhere and nowhere at once. The warrior stopped, his heart pounding. That was when he saw the blood-soaked footprints appearing on the path in front of him. He gripped his knife tightly, knowing that somewhere, watching him, was a Windigo.

He had learned about the Windigo at his father's knee. It was a large creature, as tall as a tree, with a lipless mouth and jagged teeth. Its breath was a strange hiss, its footprints full of blood, and it ate any man, woman or child who ventured into its territory. And those were the lucky ones. Sometimes, the Windigo chose to possess a person instead, and then the luckless individual became a Windigo himself, hunting down those he had once loved and feasting upon their flesh.

The warrior knew he would have just one chance to prevail over the Windigo. After that, he would die. Or… the thought was too terrible to complete.

Slowly, he backed away from the bloody footprints, listening to the hissing sound. Was it stronger in one direction? He gripped spear in one hand, knife in the other. Then the snowbank to his left erupted as a creature as tall as a tree leapt out at him. He dove to one side, rolling into the snow so that his clothing was covered and he became hard to see in the gray twilight of the approaching storm.

The Windigo whirled its massive frame and the warrior threw the spear. It struck the creature's chest, but the Windigo just shook it off as if it were a toy. The warrior crouched behind a small tree as the creature searched the torn-up snow for a trace of him. Perhaps one more chance.

The Windigo loomed over his hiding place, its sharp eyes seeing the outline of him against the tree. It bent down, long arms reaching. The warrior leapt forward as if to embrace the creature and thrust his knife into its fathomless black eye. The Windigo howled in pain as the blade of the knife sliced into its brain cavity. It tried to pull him off of its chest, but the warrior clung to the creature, stabbing it again and again in the eyes, the head.

The Windigo collapsed to the ground, bleeding profusely, almost crushing the warrior beneath its bulk. He pulled himself loose and stared at the creature, which blended in with its white surroundings so well that he would not have seen it save for the blood pouring from its eyes and ears and scalp. Then the outline of the creature grew misty and it vanished, leaving only a pool of blood to indicate where it had fallen.

Shaken, the warrior, heart pounding with fear and fatigue, turned for home. He was weakened by lack of food, but knew that the storm would break soon and he would die if he did not seek shelter.

At the edge of the wood, he found himself face to face with a red fox. It was a fat old creature, its muzzle lined with gray. The creature stood still, as if it had been brought to him as a reward for killing the Windigo. With a prayer of thanksgiving, the warrior killed the fox and took it home to his starving family. The meat lasted for many days, until the final storm had blown itself out and the warrior could safely hunt once more.

Today the Show is the largest mixed exhibition incorporating a fully-fledged agricultural component on the continent of Africa. Not only does this include the exposition of some of the country’s finest livestock and agricultural equipment but also a range of ancillary activities and displays covering the industrial, commercial and service sectors within the province.

Included in the mix is the 2100m² Food Hall, where by way of exhibits and demonstrations, the entire food chain from farm field to dining table is informatively portrayed.

Similarly, the recently refurbished – century old – Crafts and Home Industries Hall affords young and old with eclectic displays and inter-active demonstrations of extraordinary talent. These include embroidery, needlework, tapestries, knitting, painting, photography, beading and wood sculpting. Whilst the emphasis is focused on the non-commercial competitive sections; the ‘purist’ component is today complemented in the adjacent hall with a mix of displays of modern crafts, many of which are available to purchase.

Other dedicated halls include those relating to business, home improvements and safety and security, together with a further 4 000m² under cover devoted to a broad mix of general displays.

Open site stands likewise cater for a mix of exhibits ranging from swimming pools and building requisites through to a vast array of tractors, agricultural implements and the latest motor vehicles and trucks. Also, and more recently ‘The Royal’ has pleasingly seen a significant increase in the presence of materials handling and construction equipment all indicating that the Royal affords incredible value from a corporate marketing and branding perspective in respect of capital items of note.

Full of contrasts, ‘The Royal’, with its unique ambience abutting the City with its own stream, is all about old friends, new introductions, long established traditions and stimulating fresh ideas. A truly pleasant and profitable experience for participants and visitors alike.

Faith Prevails

What an excellent day it is here at Lincoln Cottages!
How it all began: In 1973, three men – prevented by government-imposed fuel restrictions from travelling to East London to participate in the Buffalo Mile – swam the first Midmar Mile. Today, it’s the biggest open-water swim in the world.

This past weekend, around 14 500 swimmers tackled the 1 600m-long Midmar. People of all ages participated in one of South Africa’s most famous and prestigious sporting events.

Some are doing it for top honours, some for charity, but most take on this gruelling swim simply for the satisfaction of knowing that they have faced it and triumphed. As some say, it is the Comrades Marathon of swimming – and it’s not about the time one achieves, it’s about doing it.

Unlike many other sporting events, the Midmar is also a decidedly family affair, with grandparents, parents and children participating together, and their families turning out in support of them.

The two-day Midmar Mile takes place at the Midmar Dam outside Howick, in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. It’s a picturesque part of the world, with rolling green hills and balmy weather.

Members of Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Business

The starting point of the race, Manaye Hall in iMbali, was the venue for the All-In-Africa Conference organised by the African National Congress on 25 March 1961. All political parties were invited but most backed off as they were reluctant so upset the Apartheid regime.

At the hall, Madiba made a surprise appearance and addressed the gathering, even though he was on the run already evading the apartheid police. He made a call for the philosophy of “one man, one vote” and also gave life to the mantra “Amandla”, which loosely translates to “Power To The People”. This was at a time when he was infamously known as the “Black Pimpernel” by the Security Branch.

Historically, Mandela has a long-standing relationship with the district, having worked and interacted with the likes of Moses Mabhida, AS Chetty, Dr. MM Motala and Harry Gwala, amongst many other leaders from the region. As former Secretary General of the United Nations and fellow African leader Kofi Annan said of Madiba: “He remains the single most admired leader in the whole world.”

Mandela’s relentless pursuit for a humane, just, equitable, non-racist and non-sexist country symbolises the vision of the ANC which characterises our democratic state. Having said that, it is important to note that the liberation of this country, which Madiba personifies, was for all South Africans, irrespective of their political origins. Sport contributes immensely towards social cohesion and nation building as well as towards attracting indirect and direct foreign investment and the economic regeneration in our communities, cities, regions and provinces.

This reality has been widely realised by local and international leaders both in sport and politics as well as academics and the intelligentsia that sport is a tool to foster social stability, patriotism and increasing levels of health and social consciousness, social inclusion and mutual respect. Participating and winning a marathon demands a lot from the participant. It requires hours of training, demands discipline and an understanding of the task at hand and test of character.

Indeed, Mandela’s life has been just that, a marathon. Had he started and sprinted through his life, he would not have evolved into the icon that all South Africans and the international community loves. Patience pays, hence it’s a virtue.

Through this marathon, we want celebrate the triumph of the human spirit, the discipline that meant spending 27 years in prison, because of an understanding of what he wanted to accomplish in the end. The marathon should evoke the spirit of selflessness, commitment to helping fellow human beings, which are some of the qualities defining Mandela. Through this marathon, we want to see more of our local runners participating and doing well in races such as the Two Oceans Marathon and the legendary Comrades Marathon. We need to ensure that through this marathon this region becomes the nursery and breeding ground of competitive road runners. The marathon should help in unearthing, developing and promoting of our athletes, further raising the profile of our region.

To quote the global icon himself when he delivered an address to the United Nations’ General Assembly in New York in 1998 when he said and I quote: “As I sat in Qunu and grow as ancient as the hills, I will continue to entertain the hope that there has emerged a cadre of leaders in my own country, region, continent and the world which will not allow that people be denied their freedoms as we were and that should be stripped of their human dignity as we were”. - Mandela Day Marathon Website

Stance Fest - Ashburton - Pietermaritzburg 2017

"The point of this show is to bring all types of cars and even motorcycles together; stance cars, older Modified cars (Tony's bagged beauties), performance cars, drift cars, super cars, sound freaks, hot rods, 4x4's and all other type of customized cars! You don’t know you’ve got it till you start searching for more and more information and the desire for greater knowledge becomes a passion.

It is the annual outbreak of “July Fever” which makes its regular appearance in mid-April and grows in intensity as the days pass, becoming a national epidemic and rejecting all known cures but one.

That cure will become available on the afternoon of the first Saturday of July at Greyville Racecourse in Durban when South Africa’s best thoroughbreds storm down the home straight to the finish of the R4,25 million, Grade 1 Vodacom Durban July.

The cure is instantaneous, whether you are among the 55 000 people who cram the confines of Greyville Racecourse or the millions of others who will watch the annual spectacle on television.

For maximum effect, however, there is nothing better than to be at the heart of the excitement, among the crowds who line the track, who relax in the many restaurant facilities or enjoy the day as guests in the corporate suites and the numerous venues in Greyville’s legendary Marquee Village.

Most facilities are booked out months in advance but the “Sold Out” signs should not deter those who have failed to secure reservations. There will always be the casual restaurants including Greyville’s popular al fresco area, “The Paddock”, in the main grandstand concourse and the popular Shorthead Restaurant on the first floor.

A variety of packages are also available in hospitality areas throughout Greyville Racecourse and these should be secured in advance.

For the more casual racegoer there will be bars and food vendors throughout the course serving a wide variety of meal options.

The Red Carpet area returns to the event for the fourth year running. It is a public area situated on the golf course behind the main stage, where you can grab a bite to eat and something to drink, watch the racing and entertainment on the big screen and take a bet in your own tote facilities.

The excitement of Vodacom Durban July Day surpasses that of any other event on the African continent. With huge crowds expected on course and millions of others around the country taking serious bets or having their annual flutter, the totes and bookmakers will be under tremendous pressure dealing with the estimated betting splurge of over R200 million!

To ensure that your cure is complete, get your bets on early and avoid the risk of continually feeling ill because you missed the cure. Watching your fancy pass the winning post first in the country’s greatest race is the only remedy." - vodacomdurbanjuly.co.za

Indoor action cricket - Action Sports arena Pietermaritzburg

We still have availability - please contact us directly to make a booking.
